Code-switching. Arabic at home, English outside. A linguistic border built around every dinner table. The disconnect — Palestinians in Palestine sometimes viewing the diaspora as diluted. Americans viewing you as perpetually foreign. Existing in the middle is not a loss of identity. It is a specific, high-pressure expression of it.

The child in Chicago who knows the name of her great-grandmother's village. The man in São Paulo who makes his mother's musakhan every Friday. Identity does not require proximity to its source to be genuine.
